databases on the internet

For those of you who have tinkered around with Microsoft® Access®, Excel®, dBase™, or some other datbase/spreadsheet system on your computer realise the power of organised data. The power of this data extended to the internet produces powerful applications.

Once you have data in a database you can design various interfaces to browse or search through the information in a variety of ways.

With web based databases the possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

  • product catalogues
  • message boards
  • knowledge bases
  • events listings
  • management systems, eg hazard risk assessment
  • genealogical information
  • technical information
  • and more...

what is required?

There are two basic prerequisites for making databased information available via the internet:

a database system on the server more ›››
a scripting system that can access the database more ›››

These are usually available on good quality servers and hosting accounts.

examples...

We have set up databases using a number of different database formats on a variety of different server systems including:
    Microsoft® Access® on Microsoft® IIS4/5 servers
    Microsoft® SQL® on Microsoft® IIS5 servers
    MySQL on Linux/Unix systems

We are currently preparing to rollout IBM's powerful DB2® database system on a server.
