SMIL

Synchronised Media Integration Language

This is a type of mark up language specificatlly aimed at Real Player.

This allows audio/video files to be streamed in conjunction with graphics, text or Flash(tm) files. The end result can be a richer experience than just making audio/video files available on their own.

Many effects can be achieved with this approach, effects taking advantage of the efficient audio/video compression and streaming of Real Player.

If you want SMIL for your site then get in touch: enquiries@rylands-internet-solutions.co.uk

what is Real Player?

If you have not followed this section through then here is a brief primer...

Real Player is a program that can work in conjunction with your browser to efficiently stream audio/video across the interent.
Streaming is important because in the case of long audio/video clips or live broadcasts, waiting for the whole thing to download before it can be played would either be slow, or in the case of live broadcasts - not realistic.

Examples ...

Here are two examples of different approaches:

Graphics and audio:
This example combines an audio track with different GIF images appearing at different points within the presentation. This makes use of a number of SMIL features including fading in and out.

text and audio:
Text can be incorporated into various "windows" within the Real Player browser window. In this example these have been combined to create the effect of a menu system for the presentations along with information about each audio file.

This uses a number of text effects including timed appearances, scrolling, hyperlinking (both within and without the Realplayer).
