hosting
At this point you may be keen to start recording or planning presentations, however we now have what will be bad news for many website owners. You can not load Real media files on any server or hosted account and get it to work.
For audio content more than 5 minutes long, and all video content you will need to put these on a server with RealServer installed. This is only available for Windows® and Solaris (Unix) systems. In addition these systems need to have high speed connections.
These types of system do not come cheap!
If you are interested in finding out more about our proposed RealServer hosting deal then read on
the alternative ?
For small audio files and slideshow (SMIL) presentations it is possible to configure ordinary web servers to allow these files to be transferred to RealPlayer. For more detail see box
While we provide Real media content for a server within a UK University this is not open for general use, even to us! This is why we have to use commercial servers such as www.occupacia.com. As explained this is not a true RealServer but a modified ordinary server.
If you are unable to configure your server then Occupacia are doing a deal whereby you can host Real media content on their server without having to open a hosting account.
One of the tricks with using RealPlayer embedded within your web pages, as we have done throughout this section, is that it is not obvious that the audio/video content is being hosted elsewhere. If you want to no more about embedding RealPlayer into your web pages then we have some information in our embedding section. However if you are planning to have us create your content then we can provide the HTML to embed the player to your requirements.

configuring your server/account for Real media files
If you do not have access to a RealServer system, or are unable to install it on your own server then there is hope. It is possible to configure server directories to enable Real media files to be handled by RealPlayer. What you need to do is find out the mechanism for adding additional MIME settings.
Those among you who may have looked at the source code for some of the pages in this section may have noticed that the slideshow demonstration was not actually hosted from this site. The server that these pages are on does not support RealServer or MIME editing.
These files were hosted on www.occupacia.com for which we configured the MIME settings of one of the directories.
How is it done?
Well the facilities on some www.occupacia.com hosting packages include the facility to add additional MIME types.
On behalf of the Occupacia owners we added the following MIME types to one of the directories:
|
MIME type |
file types |
|
audio/x-pn-realaudio |
.ra,.rm |
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin |
.smi,.smil,.rp,.rt |
