the lecture
This could be a prestigious talk presented at conference by a keynote speaker. Typically such a talk would be 20 to 30 minutes in length with something like 40 slides.
As such talks would normally be amplified within the auditorium there is a high likelihood that the sound equipment would be of a reasonable quality. Typically the sound would be monitored and controlled by an engineer at a mixing desk. As such mixing desks would normally have recording facilities built in to them it would be a simple matter for the engineer to be supplied with a good quality audio cassette to record the talk.
It is extremely important that the consent of any speakers and associated announcers/chairs be sought before any recording takes place. Seeking consent after the event is more likely to provoke a negative response.
Similarly if you intend to record any question and answer sessions be absolutely certain that delegates are informed beforehand. It is also suggested that radio microphones be made avilable within the auditorium, and that delegates wait to be given a microphone before asking a question.
Be absolutely certain that the context and use of the recording is made clear to all relevant persons prior to the recording.
We will only work with such material if the audio cassette is accompanied by a written statement that you are the copyright holder, or are acting with permission of the copyright holder. In the latter case we would need a contact address for clarification. This statement should also contain a statement that all the persons whose voices feature on the recording were aware that a recording was taking place and that they were aware of the uses to which it was going to be put.
slide presentation
There are several options here.
If the speaker is using photograpic slides then these need to be scanned. In our experience the quality of the image produced by flatbed scanners that have adaptors for scanning slides is poor. For this reason we use a dedicated film scanner to produce high quality slide (and negative) scans. In order to do this the slides might have to be sent to us for scanning. We recommend the use of recorded delivery at the very least since these slides are sometimes precious to the speakers.
Many speakers make use of PowerPoint presentations for their talks. There is no straightforward to simply convert a PowerPoint presentation to a streaming format.
